I’m honestly still mid-video, but just love your tips! You don’t hear such advice very often in the IM space, and though some of them should probably go without saying, it’s always nice to be reminded of the stuff you’re teaching.:)
Thank you, Lisa, and an awesome 2013 to you! Look forward to learning more from you in the coming year! Take care.

Hey Ken, nice to see you 🙂 You’re my very first blog commentator of 2013!
Thank you for your remarks about the video content. I know some of these seem so simple that they shouldn’t need to be said, but it’s also surprising how many times I see them left out, especially by people who are just getting started.
But even some big time marketers have been guilty of some of these. I watched a video 2 days ago with one of those spiffy speed draw illustrations, but they should have saved their money. It was poorly used and was more of a ‘cool effect’ than having true impact because the video itself was too long and fairly boring. I watched it to the end just out of marketer’s curiousity, but most real customers probably wouldn’t have.
Look forward to more discussions with you soon!

Hi Lisa,
You always under promise and over deliver. Great advice again. I appreciate all your advice and help.
Thanks,
Tim

Thank you for your feedback Tim! Hope your glass business is going well. Your site is looking great 🙂

Great tips. I would also include the tip to edit the video taking out all the ums, and breaths. Video sounds more professional.
Lisa Allen says
Absolutely! That’s a great tip Judith, though some people also argue that leaving in a few little flaws can actually make your audience feel like you are more “real” which can be beneficial.
“Ums” are definitely something anyone who does videos wants to keep an eye on though. It’s something I had to train myself to STOP saying early. After listening to myself talking on video a few times I noticed that it was a problem for me, and I worked on it so it’s less of one now 🙂

Lisa, thanks so much for your tips, I can already see one of my mistakes.
Keep them coming, I love them!
Happy New Year!

Happy New Years Dianne! I’d be curious to hear what it is you are going to change in your videos going forward? 🙂
Bruce Walker says
I can’t agree with you more on the “short and sweet” principle. There seems to be a fad going on right now where some marketers are creating marketing videos that run 30 minutes. I recently stumbled into one that ran over an hour.
What these marketers do is to remove the progress track bar and video stats so you don’t know how long the video is going to be. They also hide any information about their offer, including the price, until the end of the video. These guys obviously realize that people click off these long videos if the length is known. So why do them in the first place if you know it’s not what your customer want to be exposed to?
So do I watch them? Nope. If it’s something I think I might be interested in, I mute the sound, minimize the window, and check back periodically. In reality – at least in my case – these guys are losing 95% of the marketing message they’re trying to deliver.
I’d be curious as to what other people think about this.
Bruce,
Lisa Allen says
I’ve noticed the same trend Bruce. Some of these marketers even go so far as to remove the pause button so the target (and I just that term intentionally because it’s a very strong-arm tactic) feels obligated to sit at the computer for who knows how long even if they really need to stop and answer the phone or some other necessary part of life. (I’m even worse than you are about resisting this strategy… I usually kick the video over to my laptop, and boot up camtasia and record it to speed watch later at my convenience.)
I understand the marketing principals behind it, but I think there definitely has to be some balance with ethics and respect for the visitor’s time. The tactic probably works in the short term, but how long will it be before most of the visitors are wise to it? Not long at all likely.
A better strategy is to deliver actual value that people will want to watch voluntarily.

perfect reminder – thanks Lisa – Happy New Year, and I look forward to learning and implementing your ideas in 2013. My 2013 will be focused on TAKING ACTION, and not waiting for the “perfection”.
Lisa Allen says
Happy New Years Scott! The world belongs to people who take action, so I’m happy to hear you understand that and are going to be action focused this year!

“Happy New Year Lisa” Your right on point with these video marketing tips, in fact I’m guilty of some on your points here like making videos wat too long instead of breaking them down into sections which does allow for quicker veiwing.
Also I need to get better at knowing my target audience and understanding their needs and stop assuming what I think they already know.
Once again Lisa it’s a pleasure to open your emails because your alway on point with these short tutorial that can make a big difference how we approach our markets.
Lisa Allen says
Hey thank you for the feedback Darryl– great to see and hear from you 🙂
I think that is a problem a lot of marketers have sometimes. We assume that what we know on a topic is ordinary because we know it. But there are many rungs on a ladder and people are at all different levels, so it’s never a mistake to teach things that seem basic, because people have to learn to walk before they can run, and this gives you an opportunity to show your clients a whole strategy step by step.
Thanks for swinging by and contributing your thoughts 🙂
Cindi Peery says
Thanks for another great video Lisa! The marketing videos I really detest are the ones that have no time line on them so you never know how long they are. These usually make me drop off every time. I also don’t like it when you can’t go full screen. Especially on webinar replays where you need a 75″ monitor to see what is going on-lol!
Happy 2013!
Lisa Allen says
Hey Cindi! Thanks for coming over to check it out and leave some feedback. The comments and discussion makes teaching a pleasure 🙂
I agree with you about the sneaking tricks with the video player controls, especially the full screen. My solution for that one is usually to use the zoom feature on Firefox so I can make the video player box appear larger. Usually I can get it into the readable range that way. Just use Ctrl++ in firefox to view the whole page larger.
Have a great New year’s Day!

Happy New Year, Lisa. I just finished watching this video and it’s going into my “Keeper” folder. Thank You.
Lisa Allen says
Awesome! Thanks Jeannette! Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate you taking the time to drop by and watch and comment.
Sue says
Thank you. Nice to be reminded of better ways to make better videos.
I do think some marketers take liberties that will soon spoil video marketing for everyone.
A script and editing can eliminate those nauseating made-on-the “fly” videos.
Lisa Allen says
A great point Sue. I’m a religious video-scripter. I sometimes will diverge a little bit if something occurs to me spontaneously, but a script always helps me stay on point, keep the video short, and clear.
Chris King says
Well done. Great tips to use and pay attention to.
Shama says
As always, good information in this video. I agree with others in this thread, to manipulate viewers by eliminating all video controls is bad practice. It is obvious that the video producer is afraid of losing viewers, and instead of providing great content is resorting to cheap tricks.
I almost never watch those lengthy sales videos. Short and to the point is definitely the better way. Thanks for the reminder, Lisa.
Dianne says
Hi Lisa, I love your videos, right to the high note…which is great.
Will you be showing a video on how to create those videos from PowerPoint slides?
Lisa Allen says
Hey Dianne, yes, I will be doing a video on the recording part shortly as part of the whole video marketing series.
I should have it ready for you in a day or so. 🙂
John McLaughlin, Day Trading Coach says
Hi Lisa,
Excellent video – your calm voice is seductive and comforting, to take it all in with ease.
I never knew about half of these enhancements, so thanks a lot. I’m off to make some changes to my YouTube channel (daytraderswin) and videos. I have a combination of day trading stocks videos and beach surf videos from here in Laguna, CA.
I didn’t know I could use my Camtasia to record videos. I’ll have to look into that or you might want to do a short how to video to share.
This video is value packed.
Thanks again,
John
Lisa Allen says
Thanks John! I appreciate the awesome feedback 🙂
I’d be interested to hear about your results after you make changes to your channel, so swing by again and drop me a note.
RE more camtasia videos, I’ll put that on my request list for sure. 🙂
